How to Get Out of a Marketing Slump

My 16-year-old daughter plays fast-pitch softball. It's her goal to earn a college scholarship and this is her year to market herself to colleges and make that dream happen.

Unfortunately, she found herself in a batting slump over the past few months. Not exactly what you want when you've invited college recruiters to come see you play!

We knew we had to do something so we hired a batting coach. And the other night as I was watching her coach work with her, I realized what she was doing to get out of her slump and reach her goals is no different from what we should do when we find ourselves in a marketing slump.

What is a Marketing Slump?

It's when your marketing isn't delivering the results you want. It's when you're working as hard as you possibly can and you still aren't attracting enough clients, generating enough sales or making enough money.

So what steps was my daughter taking to break out of her batting slump that we can also take to break out of our marketing slump?

(1) First, she's getting advice and coaching from an expert.

Someone who knows how to do what she wants to do and has a track record of producing great results.

The big "aha" here is she realized she couldn't do it on her own.

(2) She's learning a new technique.

Her old technique wasn't working anymore. It's going to take her some time to break the old habit, but she's committed because she wants to be successful.

(3) She's practicing the new technique consistently until she masters it.

Old habits die hard. By constantly practicing the new habit, she'll eventually be able to replace the old ineffective swing with the new swing.

(4) She receives constant feedback from her coach.

I was amazed as I watched them work together. After every single swing, he stopped her, told her what she was doing right, and provided additional instruction where she needed it.

It's a constant relay of practice, feedback and practice some more.

You can do the same to get out of your marketing slump.

(1) Seek expert advice from someone with proven results.

Subscribing to and reading this ezine is a great start. But ask yourself if that's enough to really turn your marketing around. Or would getting involved in a marketing program or getting private coaching get you where you want to go faster?

(2) Learn a new technique.

Is what you're doing bringing you the level of success you really want? If not, you may need to learn a new system.

(3) Practice this new technique consistently until you master it.

You don't just read a book or take a course and say "I learned how to market my business." It's a constant practice. You learn ways to market differently, techniques to help you be more successful and then you practice and fine-tune them until you master them.

(4) Solicit constant feedback.

Marketing your own business can be a challenge if you're working in a vacuum. It's tough to look at what you're doing objectively. Build in ways to get constant feedback. Hire a coach. Ask for feedback from your customers. Do a survey. Track your results.

I know it's only a matter of time before my daughter breaks out of her slump. How do I know? Because she's committed to success and she's doing whatever it takes to achieve it.

You can do the same with your business. Decide what you want to achieve. And commit to doing whatever it takes to achieve it. Who knows you may not only break out of your marketing slump, you may hit a home run!

5 Ways Al-Quaeda is Using Internet Marketing

5 Ways Al-Quaeda is Using Internet Marketing

 by: Val Halla

Internet Marketing is not dead. But it may have caused the death of a few people.

Let's take a look at how terrorist organizations are using Internet Marketing to recruit and spread the word.

1. Case #1: Dirty Kuffar

Yeah boyeeee!

MC Osama is in da hizouse - and the roof ... the roof ... the roof is on fire (really).

In the old days, ask any young man what he wanted to be when he grew up and he might say 'a fireman' or 'a policeman.'

Now little boys want to grow up to be gangstas. And why not? They get all the hos ... You know they got the bling-bling ...

'How you gonna tell me my rims ain't clean?'

Sign me up!

And what bigger gangstas are there than terrorists?

Well, a rap MC calling himself 'Sheik Terrah' (apparently spelling corruptions are just another way to 'stick it to the man' - you go boyee!) has released a new hip hop video called 'Dirty Kuffar' and it's all over the web and the file sharing community.

It is a pretty simplistic hate diatribe that lists a lot of western personalities and calls them 'Dirty Kuffar' (Kuffar = Infidel).

'Yeah, Ronald Reagan is a Dirty Kuffar

George Bush he a Dirty Kuffar

Michael Jackson is a Dirty Kuffar'

Yes, the creative genius is staggering.

Seriously though, the marketing effect was pretty pronounced.

For a while there, it was all over the place ...

2. Case #2: F*ck'n USA

Do a search for the above phrase in Google (without the deleted letters) and you'll find many links to a very interesting anti-American propaganda video created by the North Koreans.

It's the animated music video for a catchy little ditty about 'The Great Satan' that is America.

'Blah blah blah ...

And you were the cause of our country's division ...

ba! ba! F*ck'n U S A!'

(The F*ck'n refrain is in English, the rest in Korean.)

Hmm, kind of sticks in your head.

The video was subsequently played on Japanese and South Korean television (probably intending to capture viewer-interest because of the controversy), but that wasn't the end of the anti-America free publicity blitz.

The video with English translations popped up on websites all over the world and on file-sharing programs. So easily the message of hate is spread ...

SIDE NOTE: A clever guy translated the video into English and is advertising himself along with the translated video. (More on this tactic below.)

3. So, How Do They Do It?

How are these terrorist groups getting all this free grass roots advertising and publicity?

Let's break it down:

** Sub Viral Marketing **

This is a tactic where a piece of media (usually video) is created that on the surface is not appearing to advertise the target brand.

Coke, for example, is reported to have created funny videos where the Coke brand appears, but it doesn't look like an ad. People passed these videos on in purely on the merits of their humor. Little did they know, they were inadvertently adverting Coca-Cola.

The two case studies above were definite tools to gain favor for their organizations (the North Korean dictatorship and Al-Quaeda), but people were passing them along for reasons other than that.

They were passing them along because they liked hip-hop music, or they thought they were funny, or they liked the anti-America/Ronald Reagan/Michael Jackson/whatever message.

An interesting mutation of the sub-viral gene! More on these mutative factors below ...

** Pop Culture Predators **

If you can associate your cause with pop culture, it's easy to gain favor for your marketing message. Corporations are dedicating time and research into discovering what kids think is 'cool' and getting their brands to fit. Of course, kids are extremely insecure and at their core, they have a desperate fear that they are *not* cool. So, if you can convince them that doing something will make them cool, the influence is quite profound.

** Current Event Free Rides **

If a particular topic is popular, people are going to scour the net to learn more about it. Hitch your wagon to one of these stars and you get some free publicity.

Can you think of a few ways the above two videos did that?

SIDE NOTE: Remember the Monica Cigar? Here's a clever example of how a marketer hitched his wagon to current events to get free publicity. I remember The Monica even getting a little blurb on Fox News as a matter of fact.

** Enigmatic Content **

Who is that sexy Sheik Terrah?!

Since no one knows who he is, it adds to the controversy and gets more people talking. This spreads the virus even more ...

Further, look at how easily Bin-Laden's messages are spread. If Osama speaks, the whole world listens now. The media runs it as it's top headline. You stop everything and listen. You tell your friends.

Skilful manipulation.

***

So, there you go. Now you too can use terrorist tactics for fun and profit.

Obviously, I'm not supporting terrorism in any way shape or form. I only wish to describe their Internet Marketing tactics as they may, indeed, be useful to marketers.

Marketing to Your Niche Markets with Stories

Do you remember how, in days gone by, salesmen would go doorto door selling their wares? These entrepreneurs would "gothe extra mile" just to have the chance to demonstrate theirproducts to people in their own home.

Do you remember how, in days gone by, salesmen would go doorto door selling their wares? These entrepreneurs would "gothe extra mile" just to have the chance to demonstrate theirproducts to people in their own home.

Why do you suppose they did that? Was it effective enough tomake that extra effort? And what can we learn from it?

The reason why door-to-door demonstrations of yesterday worked so well is because it gave the customer a chance to experience the product. Humans are experiential in nature. That is, we understand the world around us by experiencing it. So putting a product in our hands gives us that opportunity. We get to feel it, use it, and see how its application could benefit us.

Now nobody's telling you to go door-to-door like the salesmen of old . . .

But what if you could achieve the same results by illustrating its application with a verbal demonstration? What if you could provide a similar experience to your customers that was nearly as good as if they held it in their hands? Would you consider that a highly effective marketing tool? Can you imagine the possibilities of being able to get people to experience your product without actually having to hold it in their hands?

This is where using Storylines come in . . .

Stories have been used for centuries to create experiences in order to teach, motivate, and instill values into us. Through stories we gain experiences we might normally never have. They allow us to see worlds we could only dream of, or may never even have dreamed of. Stories insite our senses, and trigger our emotions. They paint "pictures" for us and lead us to an understanding of things that are, often times, beyond our grasp.

But most of all, stories are master illustrators.

Can you see where this is leading?

Through a story, you can create a presentation that satisfies the senses, produces the right amount of motivation and emotion, and illustrates the benefits of your products almost as well as if you rang a doorbell, got let inside and gave a face to face demonstration.

And no one has to wear out their shoes doing it either.

To illustrate how it's done . . .

First we'll create a scenario, then give a storyline example so you'll see it in action for yourself . . .

The beauty of Niche Marketing is that you can just about create a new market out of thin air. What you're about to witness is a Niche Market that was created where there was none before. But it doesn't matter if you create a niche from a story, or a story from a niche, because it works both ways.

Scenario: You're skimming through the news blogs and you come across a clip about how there's a growing number of homes that are unable to get cable television piped in. The clip goes on to say that, in many of these cases, satellite reception doesn't work either because most live in highly wooded areas. It concludes by informing that neither the cable companies nor the satellite companies know exactly what to do and people are getting really frustrated about it.

So you scour the web and find a solution that's already being marketed, though not very well. You read up about it and discover that there's a resellers program attached to it.

You join it and present it something like this . . .

Story Begins:

Satellite and Cable Companies Can't Reach Everybody

Television certainly isnt what it used to be. Today, through satellite and cable, you can bring in hundreds of channels in high definition that were once nonexistent, but now are just a click of your remote away. Up to 80% of all households have one or the other type of network service set up in their homes, as the old fashioned rabbit ears antenna goes the way of the rabbit test.

Unfortunately for some, the cable and satellite companies cant reach everyone, especially in remote parts of the world. There are various reasons why this happens, but it doesnt help those who are left without.

One of the problems with cable TV is the expense that goes into running cables through a town. All too often towns cannot afford the contracts required to get cable, or they feel the monthly charges would be too steep for their residents because of the wiring problems the cable companies would have to overcome. Some towns just dont want the cables running through their streets.

The trouble with satellite is that you need a clear view of a certain part of the sky in order to get good reception, and many in wooded areas just arent able to cut down enough trees to accomplish that. So there are quite a number of people forced to watch local TV through the haze of antenna interferences. No cable, no satellite, no hope of it changing in the near future.

For some, who might not even get good or adequate reception from an antenna, there's always VCRs and DVDs. But even they can get old fast, and depending on the quality of service from the local video store, their choices could be limited.

Recently there has been some advancement in online TV and movie viewing, however, that just might solve the problem for these people as well as for those who feel the monthly fees of cable and satellite are outrageous. New companies are springing up that offer the same services of the cable, satellite, and even video store companies for a one time fee to download their application to your computer. One of the leaders of this new type of online service, TV.org offers a great package that includes a large number of TV channels, premium movies, MP3, DVD, and game downloads.

So it wont be long when everyone will be able to watch HBO, or the Discovery Channel without worrying about location, budget, town ordinances, trees or anything. In this world of high tech, theres something for everybody!"

End of Story

If you happen to have visited TV.org, you'll discover that there actually is such a company, and yes, they have an affiliate program.

And yes, it was pretty much taken out of thin air! And it's just one example of how to use a storyline with a niche market. There are countless other ways and styles depending on your purpose and product. Isn't Niche Marketing wonderful?

There are just so many different ways and reasons you can come up with them. The above example came just as the scenario stated, by simply browsing the news blogs and creating a storyline based on a few short clips.

But until now, some Niche Markets were nearly as hard to get customers to, as the "brick and mortar" storefronts. The most that could be done with them is to set up a shopping cart page and generate traffic for them from the exchanges.

Then you'd have to wait and hope someone was looking for what you were selling at the exact time your page came up in their browser.

However, if you start Using Storylines With Your Niche Marketing, all sorts of new venues will open up for you. By using storylines as sales campaigns, your areas of advertising broaden greatly. You can send out press releases, advertise directly through ezine articles, create news clips for syndication, you name it!
