New Techniques for Marketing Your Web Hosting Company in 2006



There are many ways to market a web hosting company. Traditional methods include web hosting directories, banner ads on webmaster sites, search engine placements, ppc advertising, and so on. These are all effective methods if used and managed properly.
These techniques, however, market primarily to a limited target audience: Webmasters, Programmers, Graphic Designers, and small hosting companies.


With the evolution of web hosting and website builder tools, as well as the ongoing education of the common person, the average web hosting customer is no longer a Webmaster. It is more likely an alumni association, a church, an artist, a soccer club, or a family photo album. Recently, the staff of Hostchart.com analyzed the signups from several popular web hosting companies across the month of January, and here is what they found: the number of signups from people in the industry was less then 20%. Over 80% of all Hosting customer signups were from people who are not Internet professionals! So, how best does a Hosting Company target such a wide audience?


Assuming that 80% of your customer base is non-internet professionals, a Hosting Company's marketing methods should be greatly expanded beyond Webmasters alone. If your marketing budget includes online marketing only, then some potentially rich areas to find Hosting customers may be on sites like Vacation/Travel websites, Investment sites, Retirement websites, or any site that has a potential customer base with expendable time and/or income.


If a Hosting Company's advertising budget includes non-Internet methods, it may want to consider marketing on billboards, in newspapers, phone directories, or even brief commercial ads. GoDaddy has proven how powerful a TV ad can be with it's provocative Superbowl ads the last two years. Even a simple advertising method like handing out free t-shirts can have a farther-reaching impact on branding a Hosting Company's name than one might think.


Another noticeable change in the Web Hosting industry is the comfort level customers have with switching Hosting providers. Historically, customers did not change hosting companies. Most people were not comfortable moving their website for fear of downtime and lost data. The times have changed. People are more educated on websites, and there are plenty of web Hosting services that will move sites at minimal charge and without downtime. People feel free to move from Host to Host when they are offered a better plan. It is an increasingly competitive market, where companies must find new and better ways to stand out from the competition, whether that be from decreased cost, increased Customer Service, or farther reaching advertising campaigns. But Hosting Companies need not lose heart, for although competition is increasing, the number of people Worldwide who are getting connected to the internet is increasing at an exponential rate. It is a good time to be in the Hosting Industry!

I've been looking for a FULL SIZED wireless mouse for my MacBook Pro desktop setup. I haven't found a good Bluetooth mouse that isn't "notebook sized" and decided to go the RF route. Even though, you have to plug in a tiny receiver (1") in a USB port, it did not cause me any problems (I have a Cinema Display with a free port plugged into my laptop).



WEIGHT

The mouse is almost double the weight (almost 6oz) of its corded cousin (Logitech MX 400 at 3.5oz). As a full-time designer, this might pose some fatigue issues, but a wireless environment was a priority. The heavier weight actually helps me move the mouse slower and more accurately for very detailed work.



TRACKING

The response time and accuracy is much better than the BT mice I have tried (Mighty mouse, Logitech V470) and there isn't the occasional jittery jumps of a BT connection. The connection is instant - no lag. As with my last laser mouse, you have to be mindful of the slightest laser obstruction (pet hair, eyelash, lint) as this will cause the mouse to mis-track. Also, laser mice only work on solid, non-reflective surfaces (i.e. no glass desks).



BUTTONS/MAC SOFTWARE

The buttons and scroll wheel feel responsive and smooth, and the overall shape really contours to my hand. As of MARCH 2008, all the buttons, dynamics for tracking, speed, acceleration, etc. can be fully programmed using the latest Logitech software for Intel MAC OS 10.5.



BATTERIES

The battery level indicator is useful since it is not a rechargeable unit - which is good for me since it's one less cord to manage. I own a cradle full of rechargeable batteries for my various electronics.



Overall a great mouse.

just started using it a couple weeks ago. so far, it's been pretty good. i would like it if the mousewheel gave a little more resistance on each turn/click, whatever you call it.

How to Get Out of a Marketing Slump



My 16-year-old daughter plays fast-pitch softball. It's her goal to earn a college scholarship and this is her year to market herself to colleges and make that dream happen.


Unfortunately, she found herself in a batting slump over the past few months. Not exactly what you want when you've invited college recruiters to come see you play!


We knew we had to do something so we hired a batting coach. And the other night as I was watching her coach work with her, I realized what she was doing to get out of her slump and reach her goals is no different from what we should do when we find ourselves in a marketing slump.


What is a Marketing Slump?


It's when your marketing isn't delivering the results you want. It's when you're working as hard as you possibly can and you still aren't attracting enough clients, generating enough sales or making enough money.


So what steps was my daughter taking to break out of her batting slump that we can also take to break out of our marketing slump?


(1) First, she's getting advice and coaching from an expert.


Someone who knows how to do what she wants to do and has a track record of producing great results.


The big "aha" here is she realized she couldn't do it on her own.


(2) She's learning a new technique.


Her old technique wasn't working anymore. It's going to take her some time to break the old habit, but she's committed because she wants to be successful.


(3) She's practicing the new technique consistently until she masters it.


Old habits die hard. By constantly practicing the new habit, she'll eventually be able to replace the old ineffective swing with the new swing.


(4) She receives constant feedback from her coach.


I was amazed as I watched them work together. After every single swing, he stopped her, told her what she was doing right, and provided additional instruction where she needed it.


It's a constant relay of practice, feedback and practice some more.


You can do the same to get out of your marketing slump.


(1) Seek expert advice from someone with proven results.


Subscribing to and reading this ezine is a great start. But ask yourself if that's enough to really turn your marketing around. Or would getting involved in a marketing program or getting private coaching get you where you want to go faster?


(2) Learn a new technique.


Is what you're doing bringing you the level of success you really want? If not, you may need to learn a new system.


(3) Practice this new technique consistently until you master it.


You don't just read a book or take a course and say "I learned how to market my business." It's a constant practice. You learn ways to market differently, techniques to help you be more successful and then you practice and fine-tune them until you master them.


(4) Solicit constant feedback.


Marketing your own business can be a challenge if you're working in a vacuum. It's tough to look at what you're doing objectively. Build in ways to get constant feedback. Hire a coach. Ask for feedback from your customers. Do a survey. Track your results.


I know it's only a matter of time before my daughter breaks out of her slump. How do I know? Because she's committed to success and she's doing whatever it takes to achieve it.


You can do the same with your business. Decide what you want to achieve. And commit to doing whatever it takes to achieve it. Who knows you may not only break out of your marketing slump, you may hit a home run!
